Sustainable Smart Town Program
The Heyfield community is being praised for creating a home-grown program that helps individuals address climate change, save money on utility bills and create a healthier environment.
The Sustainable Smart Town program uses a three flag system to help households and businesses assess their level of sustainability.
You get a white flag for starting the program, a blue flag for making your home or business more sustainable, and a green flag recognises homes and businesses that have significantly reduced their carbon footprint.
To complete the early stages of the program you must comply with 8 out of 25 options. For example you must use a shower timer, have efficient seals on your fridge, and use energy saving light globes.
329 out of the 700 households in Heyfield have now registered for the program, which will conclude in May 2011.
